Lift spoke last week with Mark Zekulin of Tweed Marijuana Inc. and and Rade Kovacevic of MedCannAccess about the recent announcement that Tweed has entered into an agreement to acquire MedCannAccess.
MedCannAccess (MCA) run several Ontario-based Solution Centres to assist patients in accessing medical cannabis products and helped to co-found both the Canadian Association of Medical Cannabis Dispensaries and the Canadian Medical Cannabis Industry Association. While MCA started out as a cannabis dispensary in Guelph, in 2014 they transitioned into the current Solution Centre model that has allowed them to continue to help the public in accessing medical cannabis while avoiding the uncertainties of operating as an unlicensed dispensary.
In addition to their expertise in helping patients navigate the medical marijuana system (several MCA team members have social services backgrounds), Tweed’s agreement with MedCannAccess will bring in an extensive library of genetics already passed through MMPR approval, as well as a stake in CannScience Innovations Inc., a Toronto-based research company working on alternate delivery methods like the RapidMist inhaler. The Solution Centres allow Tweed and their recently-acquired Bedrocan Cannabis Corp. to better emulate the current ‘dispensary’ or pharmacy model with a more direct, person-to-person contact with patients in need of guidance. The MMPR does not currently allow for over the counter sales.
