Two years ago, brothers Adam and Ramsey Hamide, both in their thirties, were self-employed online ticket brokers. Today they run Main Street Marijuana, the largest grossing marijuana retail store in the state of Washington, ringing up $3 million in sales last month. The store is located in Vancouver, near Washington’s border with Oregon and only 15 minutes from downtown Portland, so a large portion of the store’s customers come from Oregon where there have been no legal recreational marijuana sales.
Oregonians may prefer to buy pot in their home state because it is illegal to buy marijuana in Washington and transport it to Oregon. (So yes, all those currently buying in WA and driving home to OR are breaking the law, but there does not seem to be much enforcement). For the next year or two however, the entrepreneurs say a number of factors will keep their sales strong.
