A Detailed Look at Cannabis Sales in Illinois, Maryland and Massachusetts
We are pleased to share with our readers overviews on three Eastern cannabis markets compiled by BDSA for the month of July. BDSA offers a full understanding of the evolving cannabis market though several offerings, including its GreenEdge Retail Sales Tracking, Consumer Insights, Industry Intelligence and CBD Market Monitor divisions.
BDSA has been sharing data for Massachusetts only since October, so the comparisons to year ago levels aren’t available, but its data set extends for a year for both Illinois and Maryland. Each of these relatively new limited-license markets are very different from the more mature Western cannabis markets, which BDSA has profiled at New Cannabis Ventures as well.
Here is a closer look at each market, as detailed by BDSA:
Illinois
In August 2020, Cannabis sales in Illinois’ medical and adult use channels totaled $95.5 million, growing one percent since July. Year-to-date through August, sales have reached $600 million.
Flower sales accounted for nearly 39 percent of overall monthly revenue in August with $37 million in sales. Pre-rolled Joints, which are tracked as a separate category, accounted for nearly seven percent of revenues with $6.7 million in sales. Compared to the trailing month, Flower sales increased by nine percent and Pre-rolled Joints grew by 20 percent.
The Concentrates category, which is the second largest segment of the Illinois cannabis market, accounted for more than 35 percent of total August revenues, with sales reaching $34 million for the month. Vape products, the largest segment of the Concentrates category, generated $26.8 million, accounting for 79 percent of the Illinois Concentrates market and 28 percent of sales across all categories.
The Ingestibles category includes both Edibles and Sublinguals, while also distinguishing the two subcategories. The Ingestibles category made up 17 percent of overall sales in August with $16.2 million in revenue. In August, the $15.9 million in Edibles sales accounted for over 98 percent of Ingestibles sales overall, while Sublinguals made up the remaining two percent. Compared to the trailing month, Edibles sales declined three percent and Sublingual sales grew by nearly 12 percent.
Maryland
In August 2020, Cannabis sales in Maryland’s medical dispensaries reached $40.5 million, declining by one percent from July. Compared to the previous August, sales in Maryland grew by more than 66 percent. Year-to-date through August, sales reached $282.7 million, representing an 85 percent increase from the same period last year.
Flower sales accounted for almost 52 percent of overall monthly revenue, with $21 million in sales. Pre-rolled Joints, which are tracked as a separate category, accounted for six percent of sales at $2.5 million. Compared to the previous August, sales of Flower grew by 70 percent and Pre-rolled Joints increased by 60 percent.
Concentrate sales accounted for 29 percent of overall August revenues, totaling $11.6 million for the month, representing a two percent decrease from July. Vape products, the largest segment of the Concentrates category, generated $8.3 million in sales, making up 71 percent of the Maryland Concentrates market and nearly 21 percent of sales across all categories. Compared to August 2019, sales of Dabbable Concentrates grew by 72 percent, while Vape sales grew by 47 percent.
The Ingestibles category contributed almost 12 percent of sales in August with $4.7 million in revenue. In August, sales from Edibles generated 91 percent of Ingestibles sales overall, growing by two percent from July. Sublinguals sales made up the remaining nine percent and increased by four percent from the trailing month. Compared to the previous August, Edibles sales grew by 135 percent and Sublingual sales increased by 14 percent.
Massachusetts
In August 2020, Cannabis sales in Massachusetts’ adult use and medical channels reached a combined $98.2 million, growing by seven percent since July. Year-to-date through August, total market sales have exceeded $510.9 million.
Flower sales accounted for 49 percent of overall monthly revenue in August, with $47.8 million in sales. Pre-rolled Joints, which are tracked as a separate category, accounted for more than ten percent of revenues, with $10.3 million in sales. Compared to the trailing month, sales of Flower grew by seven percent and Pre-rolled Joints increased by five percent.
Concentrate sales accounted for nearly 26 percent of overall August revenues, with sales totaling $25.2 million. Vape products, the largest segment of the Concentrates category, generated $18.5 million in sales. The category made up 73 percent of the Massachusetts Concentrates market and nearly 19 percent of sales across all categories.
The Ingestibles category includes both Edibles and Sublinguals while also distinguishing the two subcategories. The Ingestibles category made up nearly 14 percent of overall sales in August with $13.5 million in sales. In August, the $11.6 million in Edibles sales generated over 86 percent of Ingestibles sales overall, while Sublinguals made up the remaining 14 percent. Compared to the trailing month, Edibles sales grew by eight percent and Sublingual sales stayed about the same.
