A Detailed Look at Cannabis Sales in Illinois, Maryland and Massachusetts
We are pleased to share with our readers overviews on three Eastern cannabis markets compiled by BDSA for the month of September. BDSA offers a full understanding of the evolving cannabis market though several offerings, including its GreenEdge Retail Sales Tracking, Consumer Insights, Industry Intelligence and CBD Market Monitor divisions.
BDSA has been sharing data for Massachusetts only since October, so the comparisons to year ago levels aren’t available, but its data set extends for more than a year for both Illinois and Maryland. Each of these relatively new limited-license markets are very different from the more mature Western cannabis markets, which BDSA has profiled at New Cannabis Ventures as well.
Here is a closer look at each market, as detailed by BDSA:
Illinois
In September 2020, Cannabis sales in Illinois’s medical and adult use channels totaled $99.1 million, growing four percent since August. Year-to-date through September, sales have reached $699 million.
Flower sales accounted for nearly 41 percent of overall monthly revenue in September with $40.5 million in sales. Pre-rolled Joints, which are tracked as a separate category, accounted for more than seven percent of revenues with $7 million in sales. Compared to the trailing month, Flower sales increased by nine percent and Pre-rolled Joints grew by four percent.
The Concentrates category, which is the second largest segment of the Illinois cannabis market, accounted for more than 34 percent of total September revenues with sales reaching $34.1 million for the month. Vape products, the largest segment of the Concentrates category, generated $26.9 million, accounting for 79 percent of the Illinois Concentrates market and 27 percent of sales across all categories.
The Ingestibles category includes both Edibles and Sublinguals while also distinguishing the two subcategories. The Ingestibles category made up 16 percent of overall sales in September with $16 million in monthly revenue. In September, the $15.6 million in Edibles sales accounted for over 97 percent of Ingestibles sales overall, while Sublinguals made up the remaining three percent. Compared to the trailing month, Edibles sales declined two percent and Sublingual sales grew by over 39 percent.
Maryland
In September 2020, Cannabis sales in Maryland’s medical dispensaries reached $40.2 million, declining less than one percent from August. Compared to the previous September, sales in Maryland grew by more than 74 percent thanks to an increase in the number of dispensaries operating across the state. Year-to-date through September, sales reached $323 million, representing an 83 percent increase from the same period last year.
Flower sales accounted for more than 51 percent of overall monthly revenue with $20.7 million in sales. Pre-rolled Joints, which are tracked as a separate category, accounted for over six percent of revenues with $2.6 million in sales. Compared to the previous September, sales of Flower grew by 65 percent and Pre-rolled Joints increased by 60 percent.
Concentrate sales accounted for 29 percent of overall September revenues totaling $11.5 million for the month, representing a one percent decrease from August. Vape products, the largest segment of the Concentrates category, generated $8 million in sales, making up 69 percent of the Maryland Concentrates market and nearly 20 percent of sales across all categories. Compared to September 2019, sales of Dabbable Concentrates grew by 83 percent, while Vape sales grew by 92 percent.
The Ingestibles category contributed almost 12 percent of sales in September with $4.7 million in revenue. In September, sales from Edibles generated 91 percent of Ingestibles sales overall, declining by one percent from August. Sublinguals sales made up the remaining nine percent and also decreased by one percent from the trailing month. Compared to the previous September, Edibles sales grew by 128 percent and Sublingual sales increased by 24 percent.
Massachusetts
In September 2020, Cannabis sales in Massachusetts’s adult-use and medical channels reached a combined $102 million, growing by four percent since August. Year-to-date through September, total market sales have totaled nearly $613 million.
Flower sales accounted for nearly 51 percent of overall monthly revenue in September with $51.6 million in sales. Pre-rolled Joints, which are tracked as a separate category, accounted for more than 11 percent of revenues with $11.3 million in sales. Compared to the trailing month, sales of Flower grew by seven percent and Pre-rolled Joints increased by ten percent.
Concentrate sales accounted for more than 23 percent of overall September revenues with sales totaling $23.8 million. Vape products, the largest segment of the Concentrates category, generated $16.7 million in sales. The vape category made up 70 percent of the Massachusetts Concentrates market and over 16 percent of sales across all categories.
The Ingestibles category includes both Edibles and Sublinguals while also distinguishing the two subcategories. The Ingestibles category made up 13 percent of overall sales in September with $13.7 million in monthly revenue. In September, the $12 million in Edibles sales generated over 87 percent of Ingestibles sales overall, while Sublinguals made up the remaining 13 percent. Compared to the trailing month, Edibles sales grew by one percent and Sublingual sales declined by one percent.
