The Illinois Medical Cannabis Patient Program has just released the medical cannabis sales, four days after the release of the adult-use figures by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. In this article, we will discuss the adult-use, medical and combined cannabis sales for April.
After advancing in March, Illinois adult-use cannabis sales remained steady in April. Sales of $131.8 million rose 0.6% from March. Compared to a year ago, growth fell from 20% in March to 14.6%:
2021 adult-use sales of $1.38 billion increased 106% over 2020, and year-to-date sales of $494 million have increased 25.5% so far in 2022. Sales to non-residents have been an increasing percentage of overall sales, reaching a record 34.2% in October, but they fell subsequently to 30% in February. During March, out-of-state purchases increased to 31% and remained flat in April:
The state separately releases sales from its medical program. In April, medical sales totaled $31.8 million*, down 10% from the prior year and down 0.6% sequentially:
Taking into account both medical and adult-use sales, total cannabis sales in April grew 9% to $163.6 million, remaining flat sequentially:
In 2021, combined cannabis sales in Illinois totaled $1.78 billion, up 72% from 2020, and so far in 2022 they have increased 17% compared to a year ago.
*As of 6 pm EST on 05/06/2022, the MCPP published number for retail sales of medical cannabis appears to contain a typo. We derived the amount by subtracting medical sales through March from the published April year-to-date amount of $121.6 million. The amount of $31.8 million can also be arrived at by adding dry flower and concentrates/infused-products sales.
