Andy Joseph’s business making botanical-oil extraction equipment is on track to exceed $13 million in sales this year – up from $750,000 just three years ago – all because of legalized marijuana in other states.
Johnstown-based Apeks Supercritical is the second-fastest growing company in Central Ohio and the top finisher of any Ohio company on this year’s Inc. 500 list.
Joseph strongly opposes the Issue 3 marijuana initiative on the statewide ballot in November. He predicts the proposed constitutional amendment could be a “disaster” for the marijuana industry in Ohio, and even set it back in other states.
Joseph told Columbus Business First that he’s breaking ranks with about a half-dozen other Ohio businesses that are doing well supplying and serving the marijuana industry in other states. A growing list of business, law enforcement and medical groups have opposed the ballot initiative – but Ohio “potpreneurs” have been staying neutral.
It’s risky for me to come out here and say, ‘Hey, I don’t agree.’ I just can’t sit back anymore and let a constitutional hijacking happen just for the opportunity for business gain.
