New Cannabis Ventures offers readers this easy-to-read exclusive summary of BDSA’s monthly cannabis sales data for 15 states.
Cannabis sales decreased 3.2% sequentially in December despite there being one more day during the month. On a per-day basis, sales fell 6.3%. In this review, we share the results by state, beginning with the western markets and then concluding with the eastern markets. In total, BDSA estimates that sales across the 15 markets totaled $2.04 billion during December, which was down 3.0% from a year ago.
Western Markets
BDSA provides coverage for Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada and Oregon. In December, year-over-year growth was negative in 4 of the 5 states, with the annual growth rates ranging from -14.4% in California to 25.1% in Nevada. Growth fell sequentially in two of the states.
Eastern Markets
BDSA provides coverage for Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, New York (medical only), Ohio and Pennsylvania. In December, year-over-year growth ranged from -12.7% in Pennsylvania to +74.6% in Ohio, which began adult-use in August. Note that Florida and Pennsylvania are medical-only markets, and BDSA’s data doesn’t yet capture the adult-use market in New York (which is booming). Sequential growth was positive in just 4 markets despite the one additional day during the month. The annual growth was meager except in three states. Ohio, which legalized for adult-use in August, led the way. We have been warning about Florida potentially slowing despite the strong growth in dispensaries and in unit volumes due to competitive pressure.
