Like the wine industry, California’s cannabis industry will be moving towards regional appellations. While the California Growers Association hasn’t yet shared its plans, Mendocino County has created 11 different regions and seeks to be the “Napa of cannabis”. An effort that began last year, the Mendocino Appellations Project, has been helped by the recent Medical Marijuana Regulation and Safety Act (MMRSA), which put cannabis under the Department of Food & Agriculture.
Justin Calvino has been working with growers in the region and the organizaton created 11 different sub-regions based upon certain characteristics that extend beyond just natural elements, incorporating input from the growers. He hopes to develop a top-level “Mendocino Made” certification but also to allow branding beneath the overall regional label.
