James West of The Midas Letter, who posted a tour of Canopy Growth’s flagship facility in Smiths Falls and interview with President Mark Zekulin earlier this summer, toured the Aphria (TSX: APH) (OTC: APHQF) greenhouse in Leamington, Ontario, interviewing CEO Vic Neufeld and other members of the Aphria team. Neufeld discussed the maximization of yield per square foot and potency of the company’s products as being the most important determinants of a good crop.
Cory Cacciavillani, who is the son of co-founder Cole, explained some of the special tasks the greenhouse grower takes to grow cannabis in commercial scale, including supplemental lighting, screens on the vent, blackout curtains, shade curtains and heated concrete floors. Master grower David Janik explained the seed-to-sale tracking efforts the company takes and some of the other technological features, including remote control of the facility from his cell phone.
The tour concluded with a tour of the extraction room, where Cory explained the process, and CEO Neufeld walking through the Phase 2 expansion of 57K sq. ft. The company will add 200K sq. ft. in Phase 3, and, with the completion of Phase 4, will ultimately have 1mm sq. ft. of production.
